Digital Landscape Conference (DLA) 2018

The 19th annual International Conference on Information Technology in Landscape Architecture (DLA), will be held on 30th May-2nd June 2018 at the Hochschule Weihenstephan-Triesdorf/University of Applied Sciences in Freising near Munich. The conference is titled “Expanding the boundaries: Landscape Architecture in a Big Data world“.

The collected papers for the conference, from 44 authors from 17 countries, cover topics including:

  • geodesign for climate change;
  • mobile devices;
  • algorithmic landscapes;
  • augmented and virtual reality;
  • building information modelling;
  • drone-based sensors;
  • cloud computing;
  • the internet-of-things;
  • point clouds;
  • digital 3d scanning and fabrication;
  • social media;
  • teaching digital landscape architecture.

Ata Tara as part of a research group (including Dr Yazid Ninsalam and Dr Charles Anderson) at RMIT University is attending the conference to present a full paper focused on  Fishermans Bend urban renewal project. The paper is titled “Interrogating Urban Renewal Scenarios using Skyline Analysis in Fishermans Bend, Melbourne” and it will be published in the international peer-reviewed journal (JoDLA).

In this research, Fishermans Bend in Melbourne is taken as a case study and a workflow is proposed that allows designers to test scenarios that incorporate variable bulk and height of future built forms. This was accomplished by reconstituting Google Earth 3D building information into photometric point cloud datasets, in order to measure and analyse visual and environmental impacts of future developments on public spaces. This research interrogated three urban renewal scenarios against existing condition through the future skyline variations.
